Our State of Our Community report outlines extensive resource development and policy recommendations necessary for properly serving the LGBTQ+ community due to the extensive areas of inequality in economic resources, housing stability, employment, health care, and support systems. However, there are many organizations that are presently doing the work and offering resources to improve the livelihood of those in all of these areas.

Health

  • Alamo Area Resource Center assists individuals who are homeless, disabled or facing life challenging illnesses, including but not limited to HIV/AIDS. 
  • BCFS – At Risk Youth Counseling offers free family, individual, and group counseling (also available in Spanish).
  • BEAT-AIDS provides HIV/AIDS prevention, education, and services to the community. 
  • Center for Healthcare Services improves the lives of people with mental illness, substance abuse challenges and developmental disabilities.
  • Methodist Healthcare Ministries Wesley Counseling Center offers a first meeting is totally free and subsequent sessions are based on what each person is able to pay – no one is denied services based on ability to pay.
  • Mujeres UNIDAS provides education and support services to the communities faced with HIV/AIDS and other health concerns in a bilingual/bicultural familial environment.
  • OLLU Community Counseling offers individual, couple/marital, or family counseling and psychological testing on a reasonable sliding scale.
  • Planned Parenthood: San Antonio provides low-cost comprehensive, reproductive health services; physical exams; birth control; counseling; education; and HIV testing.
  • Project H.O.T. helps prevent the spread of HIV through condom and lube distribution, free rapid HIV testing and prevention education.
  • San Antonio AIDS Foundation offers HIV Testing, Education, Prevention, Nursing, Hospice, Hot Meals and Housing for survivors of AIDS.
  • San Antonio Metropolitan Health is the city’s public health agency, providing public health services and programs.
  • UTSA Sarabia Family Counseling Center offers free counseling services to the community for individuals, couples, and families.
  • We Are Alive, Inc. is a non-profit organization that assists persons with terminal and severe chronic illnesses.

Support

  • AA– Lambda Group (Alcoholics Anonymous) is an international fellowship of men and women who have had a drinking problem. It is nonprofessional, self-supporting, nondenominational, multiracial, apolitical, and available almost everywhere.
  • Any Baby Can serves families with children facing serious health or developmental challenges. Limited prescription assistance is also available.
  • Battered Women and Children’s Shelter serves to break the cycle of violence and to strengthen families, by providing the necessary tools for self-sufficiency through the delivery of emergency shelter, transitional housing & education.
  • Bexar County Dispute Resolution Center serves the community as a resource for resolving disputes of all kinds. 210-335-2128
  • Campus Pride represents the leading national nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization for student leaders and campus groups working to create a safer college environment for LGBT students.
  • The Center- Pride Center San Antonio serves the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and HIV communities by connecting them and their families to community resources and organizations related to health, wellness, support, education, activities, and advocacy.
  • Fiesta Youth meets Tuesdays from 6:30 to 8:30 pm at University Presbyterian Church for LGBT teens ages 12-18 years old. Meetings consist of teen discussion groups, games, guest speakers, videos, music, food and fun.
  • Gay, Lesbian & Straight Educators Network (GLSEN) is the largest national organization of parents, educators, students and other concerned citizens working to end homophobia in K-12 schools, and to ensure all students are valued and respected, regardless of sexual orientation.
  • Haven for Hope seeks to transform the lives of the homeless by addressing the root causes of homelessness through education, job training and behavioral health services.
  • Lambda Legal Defense & Education Fund is the largest legal organization in the United States. The staff works to secure civil rights for gays, lesbians and persons with HIV via education, public policy work and litigation.
  • Movement Advancement Project (MAP) is an independent think tank that provides rigorous research, insight and analysis that help speed equality for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) people.
  • National Center for Trans Equality is a 501(c)3 social justice organization dedicated to advancing the equality of transgender people through advocacy, collaboration and empowerment.

  • San Antonio Prime Timers is a social organization that provides older gay & bisexual men and younger men who admire them, the opportunity to enrich their lives.
  • Service & Advocacy for GLBT Elders (SAGE) is the country’s largest and oldest organization dedicated to improving the lives of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) older adults.
